1.1 What is Formatting?

Formatting is the process of rebuilding the file system. It clears original file directory information and restores the USB drive to a writable state.
Note: Formatting will make original data inaccessible. Please back up important data or evaluate data‑recovery possibilities before performing formatting operations.

1.2 Quick Format vs Full Format

Common formatting methods for USB flash drives include quick format and full format.

Quick Format

Quick format mainly rebuilds the file‑system table and root‑directory information, telling the system that existing storage space is available for new data writing.

Features:

  • Fast operation speed
  • Commonly used for routine re‑formatting of USB drives
  • Does not fully overwrite all data areas
  • Data may still be recoverable via professional recovery tools
  • Not suitable for permanent data destruction

Full Format

Full format performs complete scanning and writing operations. On Windows systems, it checks for bad sectors and overwrites data areas.

Features:

  • Long processing time
  • Larger capacity means longer duration
  • More thorough erasure of original data
  • Generates extra write wear on flash‑memory devices
  • Frequent full formatting for USB drives is generally not recommended
