Storage Capacity Explanation: Why Actual Capacity Differs From Marked Capacity
1.1 Why Is Actual Capacity Less Than Advertised Capacity?
Manufacturers use the decimal system for advertised capacity of flash‑based products:
- 1 MB = 1000 KB
- 1 GB = 1000 MB
- 1 TB = 1000 GB
Operating systems such as Windows calculate storage using the binary system:
- 1 MiB = 1024 KiB
- 1 GiB = 1024 MiB
Therefore, the usable capacity shown by your system will usually be lower than the rated capacity printed on the package. Meanwhile, disk formatting, partition tables and system management areas also occupy a small amount of space. It is normal for the actual usable capacity to be lower than the advertised value.

1.3 Obvious Abnormal Capacity
If a 32 GB flash drive only shows 1 GB, 2 GB, 8 MB, 0 B, or there is a huge gap between displayed and rated capacity, open Windows Disk Management to check the status. Look for the following conditions:
- Unallocated space exists
- Corrupted partition table
- File system changed to RAW
- Shows “No Media”
- Capacity shows 0 B
- Abnormality of flash‑drive main controller or flash memory
